Sofia runs on a proper continental climate, shaped as much by its geography as its latitude. The city sits in a broad basin at roughly 550 metres above sea level, ringed on three sides by mountains, with Vitosha rising dramatically to the south. That elevation shaves a few degrees off what you'd expect for a city at this latitude, and the mountains funnel and block air masses in ways that can make Sofia feel sharply colder in winter and noticeably cooler on summer evenings than the surrounding lowlands. Four seasons arrive with real conviction here. Winter is cold and grey. Spring arrives tentatively but then rushes forward. Summer is warm and often stormy in the afternoons. Autumn tends to be the most photogenic stretch of the year. Rainfall in Sofia is fairly evenly spread across the calendar, though it tilts toward late spring and early summer. June typically sees the most precipitation, often arriving as short, heavy afternoon thunderstorms rather than the dreary all-day drizzle of Atlantic climates. This pattern means mornings in June and July are frequently clear and pleasant, with the drama building through the afternoon. Winters are cold enough for regular snowfall, though Sofia's snow cover tends to come and go rather than settling in for weeks at a time, and the mountains above the city are more reliably white than the streets below. Humidity sits at a fairly steady 70 percent year-round, which means the cold in January and February, when highs only reach around 3°C (38°F), has a damp edge that gets into the bones more than a drier frost would. The clearest way to understand Sofia's year is to think of it in two broad movements. From roughly November through March, the city is in its quiet, low-lit phase: shorter days, heating smoke sometimes hanging in the basin air on still mornings, and the kind of cold that rewards a good coat. Then from April onward the city opens up, cafés put tables onto every available pavement, and the parks fill steadily until the summer peaks in July and August, when highs touch 27°C to 28°C (81°F to 82°F) and the mountains become a genuine draw for anyone wanting a cooler afternoon.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Cultural
Late April through May and then September through early October are the sweet spots. Temperatures are comfortable, usually somewhere between 16°C and 21°C (61°F to 70°F) during the day. Crowds are manageable. Sofia's museums, galleries, and street life are all operating without the pressure of peak summer. These shoulder months also tend to bring clearer skies than June, which softens the photography light nicely.
Hiking
Hikers and anyone drawn to Vitosha or the Rila Mountains nearby will find May through October workable. But July and August are the months when the trails above Sofia are properly accessible without lingering snow patches at altitude. Early September is arguably the ideal window, with stable warm weather, lower humidity than midsummer, and the first hints of autumn colour on the higher slopes.
Budget
Travelers watching their spending will find the lowest rates and the quietest museums from November through February, with the exception of the Christmas and New Year period in late December when Sofia draws visitors for its markets and the city takes on more energy. A mid-January or February visit offers the most room to move at major sights and the most flexibility on accommodation, at the cost of cold, occasionally raw weather.
Beach
Those hoping to find a beach near Sofia should know the city is landlocked and a fair distance from the Black Sea coast. The coast around Varna and Burgas is the go-to for Bulgarian seaside, and that stretch has its own summer season running from June through August.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Sofia.

Year-Round Essentials
Layers
Not optional. Even summer evenings cool down noticeably, and the temperature swing between a July afternoon and a July midnight can be around 12 degrees.
Comfortable walking shoes with some grip
Worth the luggage space because Sofia's older pavement can be uneven, and wet cobblestones in the pedestrian areas around the cathedral get slippery.
A compact umbrella or a packable rain jacket
Covers the afternoon thunderstorm season in summer and the more persistent damp of the shoulder months.
A reusable water bottle
Rounds out the basics, as tap water in Sofia is drinkable and the city has several natural mineral springs.
Winter
Clothing
a properly warm coat, thermal underlayers
Footwear
waterproof boots
Accessories
a hat, gloves
Spring and autumn
Clothing
a mid-weight jacket, layers underneath that can come off as the afternoon warms
Accessories
a scarf for evenings
Summer
Clothing
light clothing, one longer layer for evenings or any time you head up toward Vitosha
Plug Type
Type C or Type F European plugs (the two-round-pin standard)
Voltage
230V at 50Hz
Adapter Note
Essential. Most modern electronics handle this without a converter, though check older devices.
Skip These Items
Flip-flops as your only footwear. The city is not sandal-friendly beyond pool-adjacent contexts. anything requiring a US two-flat-pin plug without an adapter very heavy luggage given Sofia's walkable centre assumptions about beach weather, since the Black Sea is a full journey away.
