Transportation in Sofia

Sofia's public network is built around two metro lines that cross the city centre and reach most districts you're likely to visit; they're cheap, spotlessly clean and run at high frequency until late evening. Buses, trams and trolleybuses fill the gaps, all accepting the same rechargeable Sofia Urban Mobility Card you can buy at any metro station. Skip the one-ride paper tickets, they cost the same but force you to queue every time. First-timers should download the free Moovit app: it shows real-time arrivals in English and flags the occasional route that diverts at weekends. Tram 7 and buses 84, 184 and 384 all link the airport with the city. But the metro's direct M4 branch is usually fastest. If you land after it stops, the official taxi rank outside Terminal 2 is the only place drivers are obliged to use the meter, ignore the unlicensed touts inside the arrivals hall.
