Climate conditions and crowd levels for each month of the year.
Expect 3°C (38°F) highs and -4°C (24°F) lows with light snow dustings every few days. The city feels hushed - crowds are low, locals stay indoors, and the hot mineral water at the Central Baths never feels better. Daylight runs 9am-5pm.
Temperatures creep up to 6°C (43°F) days, -3°C (27°F) nights. Snow lingers in the mountains but rarely sticks downtown. Carnival kukeri dancers parade through villages outside Sofia on weekends - worth the trip if you packed thermal layers. Still low crowds.
Spring arrives erratically: 11°C (52°F) afternoons might feel balmy until Vitosha's wind kicks in. Pack for 0°C (32°F) mornings and occasional sleet. Weekends see locals emerge for first hikes - crowds remain low except during the Sofia Marathon (usually first Sunday).
Real spring at 17°C (62°F) highs, 5°C (41°F) lows. Cherry blossoms explode around Alexander Nevsky Cathedral while chestnut trees leaf out along Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard. Rain increases slightly but rarely ruins full days - medium crowds for Orthodox Easter celebrations.
Arguably Sofia's finest month: 21°C (70°F) days, 9°C (49°F) nights, mountain meadows in full bloom. Locals call it "green madness" - everyone's outdoors, terraces fill by 5pm, and the city buzzes until midnight. Medium-high crowds; book accommodation ahead.
Summer proper begins at 25°C (77°F) with pleasantly cool 13°C (56°F) evenings. Afternoon thunderstorms roll through every few days - intense but brief. Music festivals and beer gardens draw peak crowds; expect higher prices and packed weekend trains to Sapareva Banya's hot springs.
Hottest month at 28°C (82°F) but rarely humid. Mountain breezes keep downtown bearable while Vitosha's slopes stay 10 degrees cooler - good for morning hikes before retreating to shaded beer gardens. High season crowds; many restaurants extend onto sidewalks.
Essentially July's twin at 28°C (82°F), though rainfall drops slightly. Sofia empties as locals head to Greece's beaches - hotels drop prices despite perfect weather. Foreign visitors often don't realize this sweet spot exists.
Autumn's golden month: 23°C (73°F) afternoons, 11°C (51°F) nights, and that special slanted light photographers love. Grape harvests in nearby villages mean fresh rakia appears in taverns. Medium crowds until school's back, then blissfully quiet.
Crisp perfection at 17°C (63°F) days, 6°C (43°F) nights. Maple trees along Borisova Gradina turn fire-red while morning mist hugs the mountain. Rain stays light - usually overnight. Low crowds except during the Sofia Film Festival (mid-month).
Winter whispers arrive: 11°C (51°F) highs, 2°C (35°F) lows. First mountain snows visible from downtown, but city streets stay clear. Locals retreat indoors to bakeries and wine bars - low crowds, low prices, and that cozy Balkan winter feeling.
Proper winter returns with 4°C (40°F) days, -3°C (27°F) nights. Christmas markets transform central squares into wooden hut villages serving mulled wine and kebapcheta. Snow's hit-or-miss downtown but guaranteed on Vitosha - low crowds until the 20th, then festive chaos.
